Enquiries, Sources – Construction Industry Production, Orders and Turnover Statistics (BAPAU)Overview

Short description The Production, Orders and Turnover Statistics for the Construction Industry (BAPAU) is a quarterly economic statistic that describes production, orders received, orders on hand and turnover. The cyclical trend of the construction industry can be monitored on the basis of the calculated indices. The production and turnover indices show the trend during the period under review, while orders received and orders on hand are used as leading indicators.
This survey was elaborated in close collaboration with the Swiss Contractors Association (SBV). The main goal of this cooperation is to avoid the duplicate collection of survey data.
Along with the Construction Industry Turnover Indices (BAPAU), the Industry Turnover Indices (INDPAU), the Retail Trade Turnover Indices (DHU) and the Turnover Indices in the Services Sector (DLU) cover the remaining branches of the national economy. Type of enquiry Sample survey:
  • 3000 enterprise surveys per quarter
The survey population is comprised of all enterprises active in the construction industry which are domiciled in Switzerland. A sample of approximately 3000 enterprises is drawn from the approximately 40,000 enterprises. With the exception of establishments that take part in the Swiss Contractors' Survey (http://www.baumeister.ch/de/zahlen-und-fakten/baukonjunktur/ External website. Content opens in new window.), all establishments of a selected enterprise which are active in the construction industry are surveyed. Participation is mandatory. The enterprises (establishments) are contacted by post and, when appropriate, also by telephone or email. The data are collected by means of paper forms, electronic forms (eSurvey) or, when necessary, in an electronic file (e.g. Excel).

Statistical quality of data Members of the SBV within the sample drawn by the FSO are only surveyed by the SBV, but the FSO takes account of these data in the calculation of the results. This procedure makes it possible to maintain a uniform methodology and to avoid the duplicate collection of survey data among SBV members.
The indices are divided by economic branch (see General Classification of Economic Activities, NOGA 2008)
Revision This statistic replaces in the 1st quarter of 2010 the previous PAUL construction industry statistics.
The revision programme provides for the weighting base and scheme to be changed every 5 years. The corresponding years must end in X5 and X0.
