JOBS - CANTONAL BREAKDOWN: Is there a cantonal breakdown of findings from Job Statistics (JOBSTAT)?

Findings from Job Statistics (JOBSTAT) can only be broken down according to main region. However, cantonal and communal statistics regarding jobs can be obtained from the Federal Business Census (FBC). For information, call: 032 713 62 66 or send an e-mail to: bzinfo@bfs.admin.ch.

In recent years, additional samples have been funded by the cantons of Geneva, Neuchâtel, St. Gallen and Vaud as well as by the city of Zurich. The quarterly data compiled from these samples can be used to obtain a cantonal or communal breakdown of findings. You should contact the corresponding statistics offices directly for more information.

PERSONS IN EMPLOYMENT - CANTONAL BREAKDOWN: Is there a cantonal breakdown of findings from Employment Statistics (ES) or the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SFLS)?

No. Findings from Employment Statistics (ES) or the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SFLS) can only be broken down according to main region. However, cantonal and communal statistics regarding persons in employment can be obtained from the Federal Population Census (FPC). PERSONS IN EMPLOYMENT / JOBS: What is the difference between “persons in employment” and "jobs”?

The term “persons in employment“ refers to people who work at least one hour per week on a paid basis or work for a family-owned business on an unpaid basis. With “persons in employment”, the focus is placed on the person, which means that each individual is counted only once, regardless of the number of jobs that individual holds. The term “jobs” refers to the number of full or part-time positions within a given company, as long as the position entails at least six hours of work per week. With “jobs”, the focus is placed on the job, which means that each full and part-time position is counted. Therefore, individuals working several jobs will be counted for each job they hold.

REGISTERED UNEMPLOYED / UNEMPLOYED: Is there a difference between the registered unemployed and the unemployed?

Yes. The term “unemployed” (based on ILO definition) refers to people who are out of work, are actively seeking work and could begin working within a short lapse of time if they found work. It does not matter whether or not they have registered at a regional job placement office. The term “registered unemployed” (based on seco definition) refers to people who are out of work, are registered with a regional job placement office and can start work immediately if hired.

People wishing to monitor the economic situation in Switzerland should consult the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (seco) statistics on the registered unemployed. Those wishing to make international comparisons should use the SFSO’s statistics on the unemployed.

WRONG URL: When I try to reach the SFSO website, I'm taken to some page at the Departement of Defence, why is that?

The SFSO has launched its brand new Statistical Portal in early October 2004. Links to our previous website are no longer valid. Any link to the old site will automatically take the user to a default error page where the situation is explained, and where the user is invited to identify in the new Portal the information sought and to update her links. This error page is used in common by the SFSO and it's technical partner the Department of Defence.
